Among smaller cats, both striped or spotted patterns occur, superimposed over the agouti. The tabby stripes also provide a disruptive camouflage, masking the individual form. Agouti provides camouflage, helping the cat blend in to nature. The cat needs only one agouti gene to give a tabby coat. Because the hairs slope backwards, they produce a freckled grayish color between the tabby’s stripes. The tabby hairs have a bluish base and black tip. ![]() The agouti is most notable in the rabbit. The underneath pattern is called “agouti.” It is a universal grey camouflage pattern that is found in the large majority of mammals. The two patterns are governed by two sets of genes. One of these is superimposed over the other. The tabby color is actually made up from two patterns. Every domestic cat in existence has a little tabby in them, even if they don’t have the coat color. Both the spotted and the Abyssinians are genetically tabby as well. It is not the blotched pattern, which is the most familiar to most of us. The mackerel, or tiger-striped tabby carries the pattern of the true wild type. The classic tabby pattern can be broken up the same way. Spotted tabby - The color of the coat breaks up the mackerel pattern until it appears as spotted.Ticked tabby - Agouti hairs break up a tabby pattern into a salt and pepper appearance. The “M” pattern is on the forehead, and it has a whirled bulls eye pattern on its side. Classic tabby (blotched or marbled) - Patterns of dark brown, ochre, and black also grey.Mackerel - This animal has narrow, vertical stripes that gently curve around the body. There are four tabby patterns that are genetically distinct. This cat is the descendant of the wild type, the one from which all others evolved. The name refers to the pattern of the cat’s coat. When researching tabby cats, the first thing I learned was that tabbies are not a breed.

Needless to say when I lost four candles in less than a week I was beyond disappointed and angry. I only started purchasing them last Fall but I fell in love with them and bought many as gifts as well as for my own home. By the time I emailed the company 3 more of my candles stopped working 3 with flame issues 1 a timer issue. I recently experienced a problem with one of my luminara’s. Very happy I didn't toss my candlesticks as I almost did! I dearly love these candles (even if I might have to buy stock in Duracells!) and I particularly like the new remote ones esp this time of the year when it's lighter longer and a 5 hour timer is too long to run them. No problem with the flickering on the pillars. I've had no problems with the pillars except for one of the new ones having a defect that it wouldn't work with the remote, so it's being exchanged. I can't explain why the shims made them work, but if it helps just one person not toss these fabulous candles, I will be happy indeed. They all started flickering like mad.Īgain, the surfaces the candles were on registered as level. Gave me the idea to shim the bottoms, so I put a dime under the front middle of the base and darn if that didn't work. I did notice when I tilted them or picked them up, the flame again flickered wildly as it was supposed to. ![]() I was resigned to tossing or just living with them not flickering. I tried new batteries, thumping the flame gently, moving to a different site, checking with a leveler to be sure the surface was indeed level. After seeming fine (just past the 30 days of course) they started to act up: the 'flame' would not flicker or move. ![]() I have several of the Luminara candlesticks for my windows. ![]() It’s not quite ultrabook thin, but ultrabooks don’t need to pack in a big GPU, and a massive fan to keep their systems cool. When so many manufacturers just provide simple rectangular slots and grilles, it’s these touches of detail that elevate the Helios 300 to the next level.Īll of this performance is wrapped up in a remarkably slim frame. It’s a weird thing to get excited about, especially when it’s something you may rarely see given its location, but I’m a sucker for styling and attention to detail. ![]() The Helios 300 sports an aggressive pair of vents at the back with a metallic blue grille hidden behind them, and it looks like an inverted version of those found on the Lamborghini Veneno. ![]() Much like how a normal road car will have a fairly plain exhaust, maybe a twin-pipe if it’s got a bit of grunt, it’s when you get into hypercar territory that the designers start to give their cars flair. The real giveaway that this is a gaming powerhouse comes when your eyes move down to the air vent exhausts. At the rear of the Helios 300 is where my favourite design elements lie.Ī pair of blue-hued reflective strips are inlaid on either side of the cover, along with a centralised Predator logo that lights up in an icy blue. A strip of air intakes just above the F keys hints that this is a performance device, but there’s nothing distracting. Just below the slim bezels of the display is a discretely embossed Predator logo, but there’s no over the top styling. It’s a subtle touch, but one that catches the eye. Running across the leading edge of the laptop, and surrounding the touchpad, is a beautiful chrome effect strip. There are a few flourishes that identify this as a gaming laptop, but the overall styling, especially when opened up and in-situ on a desk, is stunningly stylish. Big respect to Acer for their honesty.Īcer has crafted a beautiful piece of tech with the Helios 300. The review unit we have is an actual production unit, so it comes in the same spec you would receive if you were to buy one, without upgraded RAM or SSDs that could influence the review score. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the Acer Predator Helios 300! I recently reached out to the good folks over at Acer, and they provided me with a laptop to try out that should easily surpass anything that the current-gen of consoles can manage. The only reason I didn’t ditch consoles right there and then was because the AMD GPU/CPU combo I had was only entry-level and not quite as good as the mid-gen refresh Xbox One X or PS4 Pro. Updates are mostly automatic (unless you choose to manually update), you have far more options for control inputs (PlayStation and Xbox pads, mouse and keyboard, steering wheels etc), the selection of games is huge, and the prices are much cheaper. The conclusion I reached was that PCs have come on a long way since the early 2000s (mind blown, right?) These days, it’s very rare that software and apps don’t just work straight out of the box, as it were. Not so long ago I wrote an opinion piece about how easy it was for a long time console gamer to switch and do all of their gaming on a PC. So again we can allow some time to pass after the Battle for Quel'danas before his exile. Or that at least Umbric was given a warning first. We also know that Rommath called for his exile, but I do not think that request was fulfilled immediately. Well certainly we could view Umbric's research as gradual, up until he discovered Dar'khan's research (which was apparently post-exile). So what do you all think? If your Void Elves were Blood Elf Adventurers before their transformation, up to what point in the WoW timeline do you see them being involved with the main storylines? I also like to assume that raids involve actual armies and not just the 10-25-40 "champions" that we represent). ![]() ![]() Not that Umbric experienced WoD directly, but he was a Magister and could have had access to official reports regarding the events that transpired in the Shadowmoon Burial Grounds (oh yeah, I like to assume that the faction's armies and individual goverments are a lot more organized than they look in game. Another option could be the Shadowmoon Clan of AU Draenor. The Cultists have been around for a while but it was the first time they showed their actual power and did quite some damage. Off of the top of my head, apart from the fights against Old Gods, I was thinking that events like the ones involving the Twilight's Hammer during Cataclysm may have played a part. But when do you think Umbric and his followers could have decided to pursue this study so seriously? When would he have hypothesized that the Void can be safely studied and weaponized and what could have inspired him? Now, I know that the mortal races of Azeroth have been dealing with the Void, literally, forever. My character was not one of the void-curious scholars but just hired security so he could have joined the rest in Telogrus Rift later, up to a little before the event that led to their transformation (his reasons for accepting the job are not important to this discussion). We know at the very earliest that it happened after the Sunwell was reignited to become part Holy (so after The Burning Crusade) and at very latest during Legion (if we assume that Umbric advanced Dar'Khan Drathir's research quite fast). My question is this: When would you place Umbric's exile from Silvermoon in the Warcraft timeline? As we all know, the Void Elves are a very specific group of people (Umbric and his team) that went through a very specific event involving a malicious Void-Ethereal. So, I recently created a Void Elf Hunter and I'm trying to figure out what types of events (zone quests, battles etc) he would have gone through back when he was a Blood Elf (I know that maybe some Void Elves used to be High Elves but I've made my choices). If you have links to other discussions, please share. I did perform a search and didn't really find anything. My question doesn't have to do with RP (for know), I just like having my characters make some sense through giving them a backstory.Īlso, I'm not looking for 100% factual answers as I don't think they exist, just your opinions on the matter for a hopefully fun discussion.įinally, I'm sorry if this has been discussed before. Indeed, many of the panels I attended spoke to the fact that things were changing and improving and earnestly testified that progress has been made. Characteristically, many of the industry-focused panels were relatively self-protecting and nonspecific in their responses and several replicated what are the by now common refrains about focusing on “quality,” “artists'” and creatives’ “visions,” and on “telling good stories,” with several references to the “new stories” and different “voices” which are now being told and heard with more frequency and visibility. This year’s ATX festival was as convivial and friendly as ever, with many attempts by panel participants (and festival organizers) to address and respond to the issues of race, gender, sexuality, and identity which have become pointed sources of cultural debate and pressure for the entertainment industry in the wake of Black Lives Matter, President Trump’s Election, and the Harvey Weinstein revelations and MeToo Movement. That being said, from our responses, it is clear that a renewed focus on politics (identity, industry, and governmental) exposes the problematic nature of quality, auteur, and brand-focused discourses. While there were a few stumbles-the Why Does TV Matter? panel featured four white panelists discussing diversity, for example-the needle does seem to be moving in a favorable direction, especially compared to similar conventions and festivals. This year’s festival included several panels that directly addressed the complex, intersectional power dynamics that play out in the negotiation between creative vision, industrial imperative, and audience response. However, in the wake of the #MeToo movement, the organizers and their industry panelists are clearly trying to attend to identity politics and representational issues. As a repeat attendee, it appears that ATX’s “TV fans” are also being redefined demographically: the majority of the attendees were young women.Īs a festival that balances screenings with behind-the-scenes industry panels, the audience, industry, and critical discourses on display at ATX are typically quality-focused, auteur-driven, and brand-defined. It seems, at least at ATX, that “TV fans” have been redefined in terms of licensing agreements, original content, and streaming platforms. Aside from a few notable exceptions-the congratulatory Felicity, TGI!Hulu, and Freeform panels, for example-little attention was paid to linear networks and their content. Even so, that excitement seems to be specifically tied to notions of prestige content. For example, audiences cheered every time the HBO logo appeared on screen. While our coverage is not exhaustive-ATX uploads recordings of the panels on YouTube and releases them via their new podcast, The TV Campfire-it can serve as a primer for the varied panels, screenings, and events that some of the RTF graduate students in attendance found particularly compelling.īased on this year’s programming, ATX seems well-aware of the excitement surrounding specific showrunners (Ava DuVernay, David Simon, etc.) and specific outlets (HBO, Hulu, etc.). We’ve sourced and compiled notes and reflections from the grad students who attended the festival. This year’s theme is “Precarity, Preservation, Praxis” and, in keeping with that theme, we have decided to write up our coverage of ATX 2018 for those who were unable to attend. In September 2018, we will be hosting our own Austin media event, Flow 2018. This year, many UT Austin RTF graduate students were able to attend the 7th annual event due to the generous support of ATX. One of the perks of studying media in Austin is that we’re often gifted with discounts to such events. Each year, Austin hosts a number of media festivals, conferences, and conventions like SXSW, Austin Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, the RTX Gaming Convention, and the ATX Television Festival. ![]() “We’re super proud that our team that traditionally makes games that look more like Crash was able to turn their hand so successfully and make awesome content for Call of Duty. “It’s no secret that we’ve been doing some work on Call of Duty,” Neil tells Digital Trends. I work in a welding shop with all manner of pipe fittings and accoutrements. ![]() So what do you think? All comments welcome especially if you know of something less expensive to start with. Lastly there is another product Countycom has in stock right now that I think could accomplish the same thing (currently $30). Which was more than I wanted to pay, but I convinced myself to see if it would work. The Titanium product I used at the time was $30. It would be a cheaper and possible lighter alternative and appeared to be larger diameter, hence longer burn time. I think it could be however and I want to obtain one to test. I saw another post this week mentioning a youtube video someone made something similar with a small nail gun gas canister (I think) but it was not leak proof. I can tell you that the thing burned longer than I was able to watch it and it was a long time. It is easy to fill and I keep a small bottle of fuel to add when needed. I want to try motor oil and a few different cooking oils also to see how they perform and to round out my doomsday lamp scenario in my head lol. All work good, some better and brighter than others of course. I have tried it with Heet, 94% Meths, plain lamp oil, Tiki torch fuel (with mosquito repellent), and now Paraffin lamp oil. This is why I went with a fiberglass wick by the way, they don't really burn up. My quest for the original Monster one and this one was to make something that can be used indefinitely and can potentially use different fuels and as mentioned will not leak in my bag. But I wanted something a bit smaller and lighter weight. It works great and is totally leak proof. And eventually made one from made one from a Monster energy can as seen in a pic below. I never found one for sale that would accomplish the no leak criteria. I wanted to post this in case someone else wants to try something similar or spur an idea of something similar. I think they will come back again fyi and more info later on that. Currently sold out but they have before and came back in stock. But I wanted something a bit smaller and lighter weight.įast forward and I saw this "Titanium XL Cash Cache" from Countycom a few months ago and envisioned that it may accomplish what I wanted. I eventually made one from a Monster energy can, see the pic below. This was the end result of my quest to either find or create a small oil lamp that is capable of being sealed up WITH fuel inside and not leak in your bag. ** If you come up with something similar that can contain the fuel without leaking, please share!! I'm always looking for more ideas and improving current ones. I wanted to post this in case someone else wants to try this or something similar. |
