Discussion is the priority in /r/Bushcraft. I trimmed it up, and cut the tapered threads a bit deeper./r/Bushcraft defines Bushcraft as the usage and practice of skills, acquiring and developing knowledge and understanding, in order to survive and thrive in the natural environment. View attachment 1016197 View attachment 1016198 I also channeled my toddler-level sanding skills to create: I trimmed it up, and cut the tapered threads a bit deeper. I've got a lathe on site here but it's about 100 years old and I don't know how to use it well. I also need to figure out a way to reduce the length of the brass piece so that the hex section screws down flush with the top of the body, and the excess space above the top is removed. My mock-up is here, i think its a bit longer than it needs to be (the body without the brass nipple thing is 3.9"), and i also think I need to trim off the "lip" on the NPT insert I used. Corner shop, yours is made from iron plumbing fittings? How heavy is it?.Is this an inconvenience? Its seems like one that could be sealed and unsealed without dismantling the lantern would be better. I will be absolutely ripping off the "oil lamp that seals and fits in the UCO lantern" eventually.ĭesign notes to help myself think, and to get thoughts on the designs from and It looks like the titanium one needs to be removed from the lantern to seal it. I work in a welding shop with all manner of pipe fittings and accoutrements. So what do you think? All comments welcome especially if you know of something less expensive to start with. Lastly there is another product Countycom has in stock right now that I think could accomplish the same thing (currently $30). Which was more than I wanted to pay, but I convinced myself to see if it would work. The Titanium product I used at the time was $30. It would be a cheaper and possible lighter alternative and appeared to be larger diameter, hence longer burn time. I think it could be however and I want to obtain one to test. I saw another post this week mentioning a youtube video someone made something similar with a small nail gun gas canister (I think) but it was not leak proof. I can tell you that the thing burned longer than I was able to watch it and it was a long time. It is easy to fill and I keep a small bottle of fuel to add when needed. I want to try motor oil and a few different cooking oils also to see how they perform and to round out my doomsday lamp scenario in my head lol. All work good, some better and brighter than others of course. I have tried it with Heet, 94% Meths, plain lamp oil, Tiki torch fuel (with mosquito repellent), and now Paraffin lamp oil. This is why I went with a fiberglass wick by the way, they don't really burn up. My quest for the original Monster one and this one was to make something that can be used indefinitely and can potentially use different fuels and as mentioned will not leak in my bag. But I wanted something a bit smaller and lighter weight. It works great and is totally leak proof. And eventually made one from made one from a Monster energy can as seen in a pic below. I never found one for sale that would accomplish the no leak criteria. I wanted to post this in case someone else wants to try something similar or spur an idea of something similar. I think they will come back again fyi and more info later on that. Currently sold out but they have before and came back in stock. But I wanted something a bit smaller and lighter weight.įast forward and I saw this "Titanium XL Cash Cache" from Countycom a few months ago and envisioned that it may accomplish what I wanted. I eventually made one from a Monster energy can, see the pic below. This was the end result of my quest to either find or create a small oil lamp that is capable of being sealed up WITH fuel inside and not leak in your bag. ** If you come up with something similar that can contain the fuel without leaking, please share!! I'm always looking for more ideas and improving current ones. I wanted to post this in case someone else wants to try this or something similar.
